My computer at home pretty much died the other day. Or at least the Windows installation did. It boots up for a few seconds and then dies. I have GoBack installed but it actually dies prior to reaching that point. I had been planning to reinstall Windows on the machine in the near future, anyway, so I am not too upset. Just annoyred. The hardware is working fine. I know that because I can still access everything with Knoppix. It makes it almost tempting to just live my life off the CD. Especially when you use it in conjunction with a key drive. At this point, you can combine the drive and the CD into a system you can take anywhere. Eventually, you won’t need the CD. At one time, I would have thought this would be a fantastic direction for public computing in libraries to go in, but alas, not anymore. Now administrators will be often be forced to prevent this sort of thing at all costs. Being able to access the drives means I can get to all the files. The only snag in that is accessing the stored e-mail. I downloaded Thunderbird last night and got it to run right off the desktop. Now if I could only access my windows settings from inside Linux? There just may be a way.
