The Case for Wireless

bq.If there’s ever a case to be made for municipal self-determination it’s that so many municipalities view broadband networks (wireless or otherwise) as vital components in their ability to serve the public through police, fire, and emergency care and to make their communities competitive for business. When Rep. King say he thinks that cities want to turn broadband into a profit center, he just doesn’t understand what they’re doing with the technology and how underserved and overpriced most of his state is-or he’s only listening to one viewpoint: SBC’s. – Glenn Fleishman

Popular Books

Steven is pointing to this list of Amazon Movers & Shakers. If you want to find out what is hot at the moment, that is an excellent place to look. And I noticed last week that Library Journal maintains a list of The Books Most Borrowed in U.S. Libraries. But don’t just rely on national lists. Our circulation system offers a report called a “Holds Purchase Alert” that lets us see what our patrons are reserving because we don’t have enough copies to meet the immediate needs. If your does the same or something similar, you really should take advantage of that fact. Meeting the needs of library users is what we are supposed to be all about.

Bibliocasting

Bibliocasting appears to have the inside track to become the preferred term for “podcasting for libraries.” You can hop onboard the new mailing list if you are dying to be an early adopter. But when you read the announcement, be aware that the Pew statistics have been called into question.

Redirecting Redirects

My .htaccess file contains a set of the following lines: * Redirect permanent /atom.xml http://www.libraryplanet.com/atom/ * Redirect permanent /index.xml http://www.libraryplanet.com/atom/ * Redirect permanent /index.rdf http://www.libraryplanet.com/atom/ * Redirect permanent /rss/index.xml http://www.libraryplanet.com/atom/ * Redirect permanent /rss/index.rdf http://www.libraryplanet.com/atom/ * Redirect permanent /content/newsfeed.xml http://www.libraryplanet.com/atom/ If you are getting a feed format you don’t know what to do with, I apologize. But since some of these feeds haven’t been served by this site for many years, I am hoping it will actually prove useful to someone out there.
