Why Standards Matter
I’m looking into adding FeedValidator support for Microsoft’s Simple List Extensions Specification, and have a few questions. – Sam Ruby
So now developers of RSS readers that want to consume podcasts have to know how to consume the RSS 2.0
element, Yahoo!’s extensions to RSS and Apple’s extensions to RSS to make sure they cover all the bases. Similarly publishers of podcasts also have to figure out which ones they want to publish as well. I guess all that’s left is for Real Networks and Microsoft to publish their own extensions to RSS for dealing with providing audio and video metadata in RSS feeds to make it all complete. – Dare Obasanjo
It appears that the only company with no plans to release a proprietary version of RSS is Google.
In the article, Mark Pilgrim continues to mislead people by stating that RSS is controlled by vendors for their own advantage. The copyright to the RSS 2.0 specification is administered by a three-person board: Dave Winer, tech journalist Jon Udell, and NetNewsWire developer Brent Simmons. Udell’s not a vendor, and Simmons’ one-man shop has managed the impossible-for-Google feat of fully supporting both Atom and RSS. Where are the nefarious cabal of RSS vendors lording over the protocol? – Rogers Cadenhead.
I have to wonder if a “nefarious cabal” would be preferable to what is going on right now.
