Palestinian Professor Arrested

Sami Al-Arian Sami Al-Arian, a Professor suspended by the University of South Florida (an alma mater of mine), has been arrested by the FBI on charges of supporting and financing a terrorist group. I wonder if Eric Boehlert owes Bubba the Love Sponge an apology?

Chirac: Threat or Menace?

A couple of weeks ago, I compared Jacques Chirac to Neville Chamberlain. I have decided that the comparison was a little unfair to the former British Prime Minister. First he contends he is only the only true representative for all the people of Europe. Now, he goes on a tirade to threaten the incoming members of the European Union. The French may not support the war, for various reasons , but that still doesn’t explain Chirac’s actions.

Sizing Protests

Joi notes that the Shibuya Parade was not as big as the Gay and Lesbian parade he attended last fall with over a 1000 people. Shelley notes her demonstration had about 750 people (although the organizers had a different number). I am just wondering where these massive numbers are coming from. Oh, and in case you are wondering what I was doing, I caught a Saturday afternoon matinee of Daredevil .

Law Enforcement @ Your Library

My understanding of the Patriot Act is that libraries are only required to comply when the Act itself is invoked. Routine (non terrorist or national security related) are not included. But maybe I am confused .

Peace for Our Time

“My good friends, for the second time in our history, a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honour. I believe it is peace for our time… Go home and get a nice quiet sleep.” – Neville Chamberlain “For us, war is always the proof of failure and the worst of solutions, so everything must be done to avoid it.” – Jacques Chirac

ALA Links to Terror

Go to the website of the American Library Association , an organization with more than sixty-six thousand members in the United States and elsewhere. Follow the links to the ALA`s so-called `Social Responsibilities Round Table` the SRRT. Continue following the internal links from there to the SRRT`s misnamed International Responsibilities Task Force , and then go to a copious listing of `alternative` literature . You will now be able to choose from a smorgasbord of articles calling for the annihilation of Israel. If there exists even one pro-Israel article linked from the American Library Association`s website, I could not find it, despite laboriously repeated search attempts. Not a single one. – N. Leonard Tolkan

Wireless Networks and Terrorism

Do Libraries with Wireless Networks supply aid and comfort to Terrorists ? The Office of Homeland Security seems to think so .

Libraries and the Patriot Act

Libraries exist to provide information and knowledge to the public. When our own government places librarians in the position of participating, possibly against their will, to “watch” the public, it runs counter to vital principles that have guided us for much of our history. – Bill Olds

FBI Bugging Public Libraries

The FBI may be bugging some public libraries , but they aren’t bugging mine. At least, not yet…

Bombing on Bali

Many people pointed out that the Terrorist Bombing on Bali was on the 2nd Anniversary of the Attack on the USS Cole . But reading the quote from the Australian Prime Minister made me realize that it was also one year, one month, and one day after September 11th, 2001.
